Do You Need Weight Loss Surgery? 4 Types Of Weight Loss Surgery Procedures

Is weight loss surgery the most viable solution to your weight condition? How do you know if you need weight loss surgery?
  • Are you an obese adult, and are you suffering from a weight- related health condition, i.e. type 2 diabetes?
  • Are you aware of the risks and benefits of undergoing surgery for weight loss?
  • Are you willing to adjust your weight loss habits after going through the surgery?
  • Can you commit to make changes to your lifestyle to keep the weight off?
If you answer "yes" to most of these questions, then you can be a candidate for weight loss surgery. If you're a teenager, it typically is not recommended for you to go through surgery to lose weight. Although your doctor might reconsider if you're extremely obese, and your BMI is at least 35 and you have a weight-related condition. Talk to your doctor if you're thinking about going through surgery to remedy your weight problem.
What are the 4 types of weight loss surgery?
What does your doctor do when he lets you go through the knife so that you'll lose weight? Your surgeon makes alterations in your small intestines and stomach, or both.
  1. Gastric Bypass Surgery, or the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB)- In this surgery, the surgeon reduces the size of the stomach into a small "pouch". Because the size of your stomach has become small, you consequently eat less. Your (now) smaller stomach will not be able to hold a lot of food anyway. When you eat, the food goes to the pouch, bypassing the rest of the stomach and the proceeding to the small intestines. The RYGB can be done through a laparoscopic procedure wherein several small incisions are made using a camera so that the surgeon can view your internals. A mini-gastric bypass can also be performed by your surgeon, also done through a laparoscope.

  2. Adjustable Gastric Band- The surgeon performs this surgery by attaching a small band at the top of your stomach. Inside the band, there's a small balloon which controls the tightness or looseness of the band. Food that enters your stomach is limited by the band. A laparoscope is used to perform this procedure.

  3. Gastric Sleeve- The surgeon removes most of the stomach, leaving only a gastric sleeve. A gastric sleeve is actually a narrow portion of the higher part of the stomach. Your hunger is curbed by this surgery because it limits the production of the hormone ghrelin. As a result, you eat less food.

  4. Duodenal Switch- This surgery is complicated wherein most of the stomach is removed. A gastric sleeve is then used to bypass the small intestines. Food that you eat becomes limited and nutrients from your food are not absorbed by your body as well. You may have diminished nourishment of the necessary vitamins and minerals.
Of these 4 types of weight loss surgery, the most common is the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. It accounts for 80% of all the weight loss surgery procedures performed in the United States.
